What is the difference between Human Hair Extensions and Synthetic Hair Extensions?

Before we get into the different hair extension application methods, let’s talk about the difference between real human hair extensions and synthetic hair extensions.

Human Hair Extensions

As the name implies, human hair extensions are natural human hair. Remy hair means that the outer layer of the hair (the cuticle) is intact, and it runs in the same direction when it is collected. This helps to avoid tangling and helps the extensions stay smooth and silky.

They come in many different colors and blend with your real hair because it is real hair. You can also color and style it as you would your own hair. Human hair lasts longer, but also tends to be more expensive than synthetic hair.

Synthetic Hair Extensions

Synthetic extensions are made from synthetic, blended fibers and don’t contain any human hair.

Synthetic fibers tend to be stiffer and don’t blend as well with your natural hair. They can feel wiry and coarse. You cannot color synthetic extensions because the dyes will destroy the synthetic hair. And using hot styling tools on synthetic extensions will melt the fibers. While they are cheaper than human hair, they do not last as long and aren’t as versatile.

Hair Extension Application Methods

Below are the five different methods that you can choose when opting for hair extensions.

#1. Clip-In Hair Extensions

Clip-in extensions are the most affordable hair extension. You can apply them yourself using clips to secure the extension to your scalp. In addition, they are the least damaging because they don’t use any chemicals, heat, or pressure during the application process.

#2. Tape-In Hair Extensions

Stylists secure tape-in extensions to your scalp with double-sided keratin tape. Sometimes a heated tool is used to heat the glue. Keep in mind that the use of glue and heat to the roots of your hair can cause damage.

Tape-in extensions are semi-permanent, lasting between 4-8 weeks. To keep the tape from slipping, you should use a special shampoo, conditioner, and styling products that are less oily.

#3. Sew-In Hair Extensions (Weave)

When applying weave hair, you start with braiding your natural hair into cornrows. You then use a needle and thread and sew the hair into the braid. This method works best for people with thick hair.

A weave is a permanent extension because it gets sewn into your own hair, and it cannot come off. Weaves should be applied professionally by an experienced hairdresser.

#4. Microlink Hair Extensions

When applying microlink hair extensions, tiny wefts of your hair are pulled through a bead or a loop at the end of the extension. A tool then secures the bead to your hair to hold it in place. Even though no chemicals are involved in this process, your hair can be damaged if the bead isn’t installed correctly.

You can use the same products on microlink extensions as you do your normal hair. They are semi-permanent and can last up to four months.

#5. Wigs & Hair Pieces

Wigs and hairpieces are applied topically. Wigs are made to cover your entire head and are a replacement for your natural hair. Hairpieces can come shaped like a ponytail or a bun, and you just place it on top of your own hair. These are not technically hair extensions, but they accomplish a similar goal.

Washing wigs and hairpieces can be difficult. These hairpieces are attached to a plastic or another material, so you have to be careful when washing them. If taken care of, wigs can last for up to a year. Hairpieces are synthetic hair and only last for about a month.
